Woodfired Pottery
I create both functional and sculptural ceramics
Inspired by archeology, geology, and the wood firing process, I create naturally glazed pieces that are both functional and beautiful
The work is unglazed and fired for 60-110 hours in a wood fired train kiln
Long duration wood firing of 2-5 days allows ash to accumulate on the pots. This ash then melts at high temperatures forming a natural glaze. The movement of the flame through the kiln creates a secondary set of effects, often called flashing, as the flame subtly deposits the minerals that the tree soaked up throughout its lifespan on the back sides of pots.
These effects are not random, rather careful loading and firing of the kiln deliberately guide the marks we see on the finished work. I view these pots as a collaboration, between myself, the clay, and the wood we burn to fire the kiln.
